The Last Concert of the school year

Tonight marked the last concert of the school year. Meghan performed her solo at the day time demonstration concert for fourth and fifth graders and again at the evening concert. The afternoon performance was a resounding success. The most amount of applause was for her performance in front of her peers. The appreciation for her performance shown by her peers astounded the music teacher as well as she was still talking about it when we returned to the school for the evening performance. Three of her friends showed up for the performance tonight.

This was the first time that we have seen Meghan show any sign of nerves for a performance. Unfortunately it effected her a little bit. Hopefully tomorrow I can put some of the video up. Of course tomorrow is the the third grade writers tea.

Introducing Nibbles

We have a new pet at our house. He is a very intelligent kitten that is approximately 6 months old. Meghan has all the responsibility for him. She makes sure he has food and water and cleans the litter box. When she leaves a room he stops to see were she is and see if she is coming back. He is very playful and does not sit still very long for all the cuddling that a 9 year old little girl is interested in providing. That will change as he calms down a little.

He does not seem to like other cats. My in laws are coming the beginning of June with the lab so we will see how they do together.
The picture is of him on Meghan's Hilary Duff comforter.

Fires Nearby

For those of you that are aware of where we live, recent reports on the news may have caused you to question what our situation here is. We were about 8 to 10 miles away from the brush fires. The only danger we faced from all this was smoke in the air and the fact that these were arson related and the arsonist was not caught until yesterday. We saw fire trucks from all over Florida as assistance from across the stay poured into our city to help fight these fires. It is sad to see on the news peoples homes burning but it boost your faith in people to see the overwhelming out reach toward these people. To see people assist those in need is mighty powerful thing. Fortunately, none of our friends faced any problems from the fires.

Meghan missed 2 days of school because of the fires. We will see if that has any effect on the last day of school.

Happy Mothers Day

Meghan had her first performance on violin at the King Center. While she has performed her dance recitals at the the King Center, this was a first for playing her violin and there was enough light for her to see the audience from the stage. She claims that she cannot see the audience at all when they are onstage with the dance recital which is possible with the light off in the seating area and the stage lights shining on the stage. Her group performed very well indeed. Very impressive for a group of elementary and middle school students. The Brevard Symphony Youth Orchestra (BSYO) has three level of groups. Meghan is in the strings ensemble. The next group up is Concert Orchestra which seems to made up of mostly junior high and high school and the group after that is Symphony Orchestra consist of all high school age students.

For those of you unfamiliar with the King Center it is where josh Groban, Donna Summer, Liza Manelli, Willie Nelson, Cyndi Lauper, Tony Bennett and many others have performed here in the Melbourne area. It is quite an honor and impressive to the kids to get to perform at this location.

I must say that it was enjoyable way to spend Mothers Day. I watched my daughter perform on a large stage for an audience that probably number in the hundreds for the first time with her violin. She appeared very poised and come when she came on stage - no small feat for an nine year old regardless of having danced on this same stage the previous 2 years with her dance classes. This is one of those moments that you do not wish to forget.

For dinner, we all went out to eat Olive Garden which was a disappointment for Meghan. She thought for sure we would choose her favorite and go to Red Lobster; however, we will be going there for Meghan's dance recital dinner with Mamoo, Papoo, Mawmaw and Pawpaw so we decide to go somewhere different.
Happy Mothers Day to all the moms out there!!!!! I hope you spent it in an enjoyable way with quality time spent with your kids or phone calls from your kids.

The Final Countdown

The final countdown before summer break is upon us. Today as I was dropping Meghan at school, they announced over the intercom that it yearbooks could be purchased for $13.00. cash payments are the only form of payment since we are right at the end of the school year. Of course I managed to forget about it until 9:30 tonight and I have a hard and fast rule about going to ATMs after dark which meant we scrambled and Alan has to give up his stash.

Tonight was also the final rehearsal for Meghan's string orchestra for this year. The concert is Sunday (Happy Mother's Day) which meant that we had to purchase tickets tonight to avoid the additional surcharges that will be added at the King Center's Box office and only cost us $46.00.

On Wednesday, we will purchase the tickets to the dance recital which is also at the King Center but again to avoid surcharges at the box office we must purchase early. Tickets for this are $19.00 per adult. The only people that we have to get tickets for are the grandparents and Alan. I am a "backstage" mom which means I do not have to purchase a ticket.
Unfortunately, Uncle Bryan and Aunt Jennifer appear to be unable to come this year. While Meghan is disappointed that they are unable to attend any of her events, she will have plenty of people there to cheer her on as she dances across the stage. Her teacher from kindergarten is coming to the dance recital.

Before the end of the month we also have dance registration fees for school year and registration and audition fees for string ensemble for next year. I feel like that song in Evita that has the line about the money keeps rolling out except that unlike the song the money is not rolling in. Oh well I have a year to save for the following year. Thankfully knowing these things are coming up, we save toward them each year.

Meghan's school concert is on May 20 and all her friends from dance will be there. So far she looks to be the only one playing a solo and that will be Angel of Music from Phantom of the Opera.

Science Fair

Well, yesterday was the wrap up of the science fair and the the third grade science project. Meghan did not win anything at the county science fair. She was very disappointed but as we told her, you cannot win everything. This from the child that was not even sure that she wanted to enter her project in the school fair let alone hope top win and get to the county level.

On a brighter note, she did come home with letter notifying us that she was won a character achievement medal at school and that will be awarded on May 8th. Granted this is the third one she has received since kindergarten but it is still an honor since they award 1 per class each month. Also this will give her a chance to wear on of the skirt suit type outfits and gives us an excuse for dinner out.
